Synopsis
In many ways it was the perfect match: Ernest Hemingway whose heroes personified his definition of courage - "grace under pressure" - and Gary Cooper, the man who often portrayed those characters on screen. Yet in other ways-politically, intellectually, and personally- Hemingway and Cooper were a study in contradictions. The story of this extraordinary 20+ year friendship is the focus of this documentary, the film narrated by Sam Waterson, features interviews with such Hollywood luminaries as Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, George Plimpton, and Patricia Neal.

Kirk Douglas Dies at 103: 1916-2020 Talk about a life well lived. That we were blessed to have met and worked with Kirk Douglas remains a treasured memory. So gracious and charming. We worked with him on True Gen; it was several years after his stroke As we set up the lighting and camera, he asked if we'd prefer to make it audio only. He was concerned that, on camera, he might be off-putting to the viewer. "No, sir," we said, immediately. "Unless, of course, it's your preference. Though we very much would encourage you otherwise, even if you feel perhaps ill-at-ease." He let out a laugh. Roaring. And said: "After all the sick bastards I've played, you think I'd ever feel ill-at-ease in front of the camera." To borrow from Sir Winston Churchill -- Kirk Douglas, we shan't soon see your like again. Watch Video
